Remembering Eastland: 50 years later, Charlotte residents say it was 'everything'

Remembering Eastland: 50 years later, Charlotte residents say it was 'everything'

I was interviewed by the Charlotte Observer for a story looking back at the cultural legacy of Eastland Mall and its place in Charlotte's history. 2025 marked the 50th year since Eastland Mall was first opened in 1975.

As a graphic designer and lifelong East Charlotte creative, I was asked to share my perspective on Eastland's visual identity—particularly the iconic logo designed by Alfred Kloke. The logo is one of those pieces of Charlotte design history that has remained recognizable long after the mall itself closed. It means so much to so many Charlotteans, including my family and I! My connection is especially meaningful because my mother worked at Eastland Mall while she was pregnant with me. I then was raised in and around the mall for years until it was finally destroyed in 2010.

The Charlotte Observer's story brought together memories and perspectives from people connected to the mall and its legacy. Being able to contribute my designer perspective to a conversation about Charlotte's creative history was an absolute honor.
